Clara Schumann - 3 Romances, Op. 22 (Transcribed for Cello and Piano)
Clara Schumann’s Three Romances, Op. 22, were written on July 14, 1853, the same year as the collaborative F-A-E Sonata, and were offered to Joseph Joachim as a gesture of friendship. Their first performance may even have taken place on the same day as the F-A-E Sonata, since Clara Schumann served as pianist at that October 1853 event. These intimate Romantic pieces remain among her most beloved chamber works, combining lyrical warmth with elegant, expressive writing.
This transcription presents a piano part drawn from both the manuscript and the first edition, along with a cello part that follows the manuscript as closely as possible. About seventy percent of the original violin line has been transposed down an octave for the cello, while the remaining passages stay in the original register where needed for clarity, balance, and musical shape.
A welcome addition to the cello repertoire, this transcription gives cellists access to one of Clara Schumann’s finest lyrical works. It is well suited for recitals, lessons, and intermediate to advancing players looking for Romantic repertoire of substance and charm.
