Souvenir de Kieff, Op. 22, No. 2 by ​Vladislav Aloiz was published by Jurgenson in July 1895 as the second piece in the Deux Pièces set, with Sérénade orientale as the first. Our edition is based on the first edition by Jurgenson. ​A​ work with the same title is notable for being possibly misattributed to Servais by Lev Ginzburg in his History of the Violoncello. 

We have carefully prepared our edition, indicating deviations from the original text with editorial markings. In the piano score, the cello cue line occasionally differs from the separate cello part regarding slurring, dynamics, and articulation. Our editorial approach preferred the separate cello part, incorporating additional dynamics where beneficial.

Souvenir de Kieff begins in F minor and follows a ternary form. The middle section features an accompanied cadenza, leading to a heroic return in F major. The melody is original to Aloiz and does not seem to be based on any recognizable Ukrainian tune. It is a worthy tribute to the great city of Kyiv!

This piece is dedicated to Rudolf Erlich (1866–1924), a Russian cellist of Czech origin known for his close connections with many influential Russian composers. In 1882, he graduated from the Prague Conservatory, cello class of Franz Hegenbart. Other works dedicated to Erlich include Gliere's Ten Duets, Op. 53 and Aleksandr Yurasovsky's Sonate dramatique, Op. 3.
