In 2009, Fein composed 3 Romances for his friend Dane Johansen, with Yuriy Leonovich premiering the work on October 15, 2016. Based on Verlaine’s poetry, the 3 Romances explore the expressive potential of music in capturing the spoken quality of the poems. The interludes between the songs act as metaphors for turning the pages of a cherished poetry album, echoing and foreshadowing the emotional content of the surrounding music.
