Dvořák - Písně milostné (Love Songs), Op. 83 (Transcribed for Cello and Piano)
Dvořák’s cycle Love Songs is an 1888 reworking of selected songs from Cypresses, an earlier cycle dating from 1865. The original Cypresses songs were criticized for their unidiomatic treatment of the text, and Dvořák later returned to the material, recomposing and reshaping many of the songs into separate cycles.
These songs have a transcendent beauty. In No. 7 of Love Songs, Dvořák quotes the slow movement from his Piano Quintet.
The complete cycle lasts about 15 minutes, with the shortest song lasting only about one minute. This transcription for cello and piano retains the original piano part. The cello part does not go above the A harmonic, and everything is notated in bass clef.
