Puccini - Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut (Transcribed for Cello and Piano)
Puccini’s Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut is a staple of the orchestral repertoire and one of the opera’s most beloved instrumental moments. Richly expressive and unmistakably vocal in character, the Intermezzo translates beautifully to the cello, allowing the instrument to capture both the warmth of Puccini’s melodic writing and the dramatic sweep of the original orchestral score.
This arrangement grew out of an earlier version commissioned by my friend, trombonist Massimo La Rosa, for his album Sempre Espressivo. In that trombone arrangement, the piano part was made somewhat thicker for balance in live performance. This cello version, created in connection with the 100th anniversary of Puccini’s death in 2024, rethinks the accompaniment for cello and piano, thinning the texture in places and revoicing several passages for greater clarity and balance.
Well-suited for recitals, lessons, studio classes, and short concert selections, this arrangement gives cellists an opportunity to explore Puccini’s long-breathed lyricism, expressive pacing, operatic phrasing, warm tone, and dramatic intensity in a compact and effective concert piece.
