Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 needs no introduction. It is undoubtedly his most famous Hungarian Rhapsody and one of the most recognizable classical works in popular culture. Ironically, it is also one of the least Hungarian of the set, with the lassan section based on a Romanian melody and the friska section based on Heinrich Ehrlich’s unpublished Konzertstück.
This transcription for cello and piano is transposed down a minor third, placing the lassan in A minor and the friska in D major. The new key makes the work more idiomatic for the cello while preserving the brilliance, contrast, and theatrical sweep of Liszt’s original.
This transcription is suitable for advanced cellists and works well as a recital showpiece, encore, or virtuosic concert work. It is especially effective for performers looking for a familiar audience favorite in a version that brings Liszt’s flair, drama, and technical fireworks to the cello.
