Chopin-Servais - 2 Mazurkas (Transcribed for Cello and Piano)

François Servais transcribed two of Chopin’s mazurkas, Op. 6 No. 1 and Op. 7 No. 3, for cello and piano. Apart from changes of key, Servais’s versions follow Chopin’s first editions closely, preserving the character, rhythm, and elegant phrasing of the originals while allowing the cello to take on Chopin’s melodic line.

Servais’s transcriptions were later expanded upon by Leopold Grützmacher in his set of ten Chopin mazurkas. This edition presents Servais’s earlier version, based on the Schott edition published in July 1863 and graciously provided by the Servais Society.

This is the first modern edition of Servais’s two Chopin mazurkas, offering cellists a graceful and historically significant addition to the Romantic transcription repertoire.
