Henryk Wieniawski’s Variations on an Original Theme is a tour de force for violin, combining lyrical elegance, brilliant passagework, and the dramatic flair of nineteenth-century virtuoso writing. Like the Scherzo-Tarantelle and Polonaise de concert, the work shows Wieniawski’s gift for transforming a memorable theme into a dazzling concert piece.
This transcription for cello and piano is in D minor and D major, while the original violin work is in A minor and A major. In preparing the cello version, three possible keys were considered. Although the original key works well for the cello in many passages, some colors and techniques would not be practical or fully effective. The final version is designed to be idiomatic for the cello and to use the instrument’s range, resonance, and technical possibilities to their full potential.
Brilliant, demanding, and highly effective in performance, this transcription is well suited for advanced cellists looking for a major Romantic showpiece beyond the standard repertoire. We hope it will be a welcome addition to the cello repertoire alongside Wieniawski’s Scherzo-Tarantelle and Polonaise de concert.
