David Popper’s Im Walde (In the Forest), Op. 50, is one of the staples of the cello repertoire and one of his most substantial concert works. Cast as a suite, the piece combines Romantic character writing, lyrical expression, virtuoso passagework, and vivid scene painting, making it one of Popper’s most imaginative contributions to the instrument. This beautifully engraved critical edition presents the orchestral parts for the original orchestra version.

This edition is based on four sources: the first-edition orchestral score published by Rahter, plate no. 2468; the first-edition orchestral parts published by Rahter, plate no. 2469, graciously provided by the Free Library of Philadelphia; the Neue Ausgabe of the cello solo part published by Rahter, plate no. 2335; and the Neue Ausgabe of the piano reduction, also published under plate no. 2335. The orchestral score and parts are especially important, since they contain far more detail and fewer errors than the piano reduction.

The Neue Ausgabe of the solo cello part remains an important source for additional information such as fingerings and bowings, but it also contains numerous errors and even adds solo material in certain tutti sections, most notably between rehearsal letters I and K in Heimkehr, where the first edition gives the soloist nothing to play. This critical edition clarifies the relationship between the surviving sources while preserving Popper’s orchestral style and original conception.
