Vivaldi's RV 409 is a unique work in the composer's cello concerto oeuvre. The continuo part is prescribed to the bassoon, in the first movement explicitly and in the others implicitly. In the first movement, the solo portions are Adagio, punctuated by short, Allegro ritornellos. The second movement is the opposite, with the solo passages having an Allegro marking, while the short ritornellos Adagio. The finale is a standard Allegro ritornello form.

Although the solo part is frequently written in tenor clef, Vivaldi rarely goes above the fourth position. The fifth position is used a couple of times in the outer movement, always stepwise.

Our edition is based on the autograph score held at Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria, Turin (I-Tn): Foà 29, f.126-133. This set includes the score and all parts. The viola and violin 2 parts are the same in the score. These are printed in conventional clefs in separate parts. For a cello part with fingerings and bowings see the piano reduction.
