Vivaldi's RV 400 cello concerto is a joyful work that requires ample technique and finesse. The first movement opens with an interplay between the violins. In the first solo section, the soloist rises to the C one octave above the middle C. Thumb position is required to play this section. Both the outer movements have many string crossings. The slow movement is a tranquil sarabande, accompanied only by the basso continuo, making it sound like a sonata. The finale is a sturdy minuet. Many of the techniques used in this concerto are found in Bach's C-major cello suite.

Our edition is based on the autograph score held at Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria, Turin (I-Tn): Foà 29. This set includes an orchestra score and separate parts. For a cello part with fingerings and bowings see the piano reduction.
