Servais - Le Carnaval de Venise, Op. 9 (Urtext Edition, Piano Version)

Servais’s Fantaisie burlesque, ou le Carnaval de Venise is one of his brilliant variation-form concert fantasies, based chiefly on the famous Venetian melody “Cara mamma mia.” The work was first known under the title Fantaisie burlesque and was dedicated to Arkady Rachmaninoff, paternal grandfather of the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Its first known performance took place on 3 September 1838 in Halle, Belgium, while the published title page preserves the original title and adds the subtitle ou le Carnaval de Venise.

Like many nineteenth-century composers, including Paganini, Ernst, and Dotzauer, Servais was drawn to the Carnaval de Venise theme as a vehicle for virtuoso variations. His fantasy opens with an introduction based on a song about Pulcinella, a melody that returns later in the finale. The main “Cara mamma mia” theme is followed by two variations exploring octaves, trills, up-bow staccato, and the full range of the cello, before giving way to a lyrical slow variation and a brilliant finale in which the Pulcinella and “Cara” themes are combined.

The work survives in several important early sources, including three manuscripts at the Brussels Conservatory and the engraver’s copies of the piano and orchestral versions preserved at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. These sources reveal the complex development of the piece, including material shared with the early versions of Souvenir de St. Pétersbourg. This edition presents Servais’s dazzling fantasy in a clean modern engraving, bringing together its operatic flair, comic character, and virtuoso cello writing.
