Cassadó’s famous Toccata, originally published under the name of Frescobaldi, is now understood to be Cassadó’s own composition, written at a time when musical hoaxes and pseudo-Baroque works were enjoying considerable popularity. Although the piece is neo-Baroque in style rather than authentically Frescobaldian, it remains a striking and effective concert work in its own right.
The Toccata combines Baroque-inspired figuration with Cassadó’s unmistakable sense of drama, color, and cello virtuosity. Its brilliant passagework, rhythmic drive, and expressive intensity have helped it remain one of Cassadó’s best-known contributions to the cello repertoire.
This edition is based on the first edition published by Universal Edition and includes Cassadó’s original fingerings and bowings. Incorrect pitches in the cello part have been corrected.
