Popper - Funeral March and Mazurka No. 4, Op. 35 (Urtext Edition)
David Popper’s Zwei Stücke, Op. 35, were published in 1880 by Rieter-Biedermann. The set brings together two sharply contrasting works: the solemn Trauermarsch and the joyful, spirited Mazurka No. 4. The Trauermarsch presents an unusual formal design and may have been conceived as an homage to Frédéric Chopin, whose own famous Funeral March bears the same opus number. Popper’s atmosphere, however, is darker and more Wagnerian, at times recalling the world of Götterdämmerung.
Mazurka No. 4 is dedicated to the memory of violinist Henryk Wieniawski, who died earlier in 1880. Its character and energy recall Wieniawski’s Obertass and Dudziarz, Op. 19. Popper composed six numbered mazurkas in all, and while the Trauermarsch carries no dedication, the pairing of these two pieces may be understood as a musical tribute to his dear friend.
This edition is based on the original Rieter-Biedermann publication, plate numbers 1110 and 1111. All deviations from the source are clearly indicated with editorial markings.
These pieces are well suited for recitals, lessons, and Romantic character-piece study. The Trauermarsch offers opportunities for dramatic pacing, depth of tone, and sustained expression, while the Mazurka No. 4 develops dance character, rhythmic lift, elegance, and brilliant but manageable passagework.
