Popper composed his Requiem in memory of his publisher Daniel Rahter (1828-1891). Rahter was the manager of the A. Büttner music publishing firm in Saint Petersburg from 1865 to 1890, and in 1879 he set up his own music publishing house in Hamburg. In addition to Popper's music, Rahter also published many works by Tchaikovsky.

The Requiem score

Popper composed his Requiem in memory of his publisher Daniel Rahter (1828-1891). Rahter was the manager of the A. Büttner music publishing firm in Saint Petersburg from 1865 to 1890, and in 1879 he set up his own music publishing house in Hamburg. In addition to Popper's music, Rahter also published many works by Tchaikovsky.

The Requiem score begins with a touching poem: "Tears that have become music, the loyal friendship is hers..." This poem is reprinted in our edition. The work is originally scored for 3 cellos and a chamber orchestra.

This Adagio is in F# minor in ternary (ABA) form, with a hint of sonata form. The second theme, initially in A major, is based on Schubert's Ave Maria. This theme is thoroughly developed in the A section and continues to be developed in the B-flat-major B section. The B section transitions back to A via a fugato. The return of A begins like the opening of the Requiem. The return of both themes is truncated. The Requiem holds the closest kinship to Popper's Andact from Im Walde, Op. 50.

Our edition is based on the first edition published by D. Rahter in 1892 with plate number 64.

There are slight differences in the solo parts of the orchestra score, piano score, and separate parts, such as slurring and articulations. We gave preference to the text in the separate parts in most cases. A couple of staccatos were restored from the piano score.

This set contains a piano score and solo parts with original fingerings and bowings. The orchestral version of this piece is published here: https://yuriyleonovich.com/product/902341

We dedicate this edition to the tragically departed pianists Herman Whitfield III and Oksana Vignan.
