Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64, was composed in 1888 and remains one of his most beloved orchestral works. The second movement, marked Andante cantabile, con alcuna licenza, is especially famous for its broad, singing melody and deeply expressive Romantic character. Originally introduced by the horn, the movement’s main theme has long been admired for its warmth, nobility, and emotional intensity.
This transcription adapts the Andante cantabile for cello and piano, allowing the cello to take on the movement’s expansive melodic lines while the piano preserves the harmonic depth and orchestral atmosphere of the original. This version has been shortened to approximately four minutes, making it practical for recitals, church programs, encores, and other settings where a compact Romantic work is needed.
