Pleyel - Sonata for Pianoforte and Violoncello, Ben. 436 (transcribed by Yuriy Leonovich)

Ignaz Pleyel’s Sonata for Pianoforte and Violoncello, Ben. 436 began as a work for piano with obbligato violin and cello. Pleyel later arranged the same material for piano and flute, reflecting the flexible chamber music practices of the late eighteenth century. The present edition draws on both of Pleyel’s versions to create a historically informed transcription for piano and cello in keeping with the musical traditions of the 1780s. Bright, graceful, and full of Classical-era elegance, this happy work is bound to brighten any recital program.

This edition combines ideas from the original piano, violin, and cello version with material from Pleyel’s later piano and flute arrangement. Although the piano and cello function as more or less equal partners, the work should be billed as Sonata for Pianoforte and Violoncello, following the custom of the period rather than modern expectations about solo-instrument sonatas.

Well-suited for recitals, studio performances, and Classical-era chamber music study, this sonata offers cellists an opportunity to explore elegant phrasing, light articulation, conversational ensemble playing, and historically informed style without excessive technical demands.
