Camille Saint-Saëns’s Allegro appassionato, Op. 43, is a staple of the cello repertoire and one of his most effective shorter concert works for the instrument. Brilliant, lyrical, and compact, the piece combines Romantic intensity with Saint-Saëns’s characteristic elegance and clarity, making it a favorite for recitals, auditions, and advanced study.
This edition is based on the first editions of both the orchestral and piano versions of the work. The score includes a clean cello part reflecting the composer’s original intentions, while the separate cello part includes time-tested fingerings and bowings by the editor. Unlike other Urtext editions currently available, this edition also includes the rehearsal numbers found in the orchestral score and parts, making rehearsal with orchestra more efficient.
Well suited for lessons, recitals, auditions, competitions, and orchestral-feature performances, Allegro appassionato gives cellists opportunities to develop passionate Romantic phrasing, brilliant passagework, rhythmic drive, expressive contrast, and polished concert style.
