Bernhard Romberg wrote many works intended for students, but his Three Sonatas for Two Cellos, Op. 43, have achieved a lasting place in the cello teaching repertoire. These duos have withstood the test of time and continue to be studied around the world, offering young cellists music that is both pedagogically useful and genuinely rewarding to play.

Many cellists know these sonatas through the commonly used editions by Friedrich Grützmacher and Friedrich Gustav Jansen. Those versions, however, are highly edited and in some places substantially recomposed. This new Urtext edition stays true to Romberg’s original text while adding a few practical clarifications regarding fingerings and bowings in the separate cello parts.

This set includes a score and parts.

Well suited for lessons, studio classes, recitals, and ensemble study, these sonatas give developing cellists valuable experience with Classical style, duet balance, clear articulation, phrasing, intonation, and chamber-music responsiveness. They remain ideal teaching pieces while also standing as beautiful works in their own right.
