Composed in 2008 at the Kent/Blossom Music Festival, Serenade is a journey through music of the night. The outer movements serve as bookends, evoking the gentle guitar strumming of a troubadour, while the inner movements explore a range of nocturnal characters, dances, and dramatic contrasts.

The second movement quotes Strauss’s Don Juan, while the third movement presents a dance repeated ad infinitum. The fourth movement is another dance, this time a sicilienne. The cadenza enters the world of night music à la Bartók, full of unrest, tension, and atmospheric color.

This work is suitable for intermediate to early advanced cellists and works well for recital programming, contemporary music concerts, and performers interested in character pieces, dance forms, quotation, and expressive modern cello writing.
