Julius Klengel (1859–1933) was one of the most influential cellists and cello teachers of the late Romantic era. A longtime member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and professor at the Leipzig Conservatory, he helped shape generations of cellists through his teaching, editions, technical studies, and original works for the instrument. His Concertino No. 1 has become a staple of the student concerto repertoire and remains one of the most effective first concerto experiences for developing cellists.
The Concertino No. 1 combines lyrical writing, clear formal structure, and approachable virtuosity in a way that is especially valuable for young players. It gives students the experience of playing a substantial concert work while remaining technically manageable, making it useful for lessons, studio recitals, competitions, and first concerto performances.
This publication is an urtext edition of the solo cello part. It offers a corrected alternative to the commonly available first edition published by Breitkopf & Härtel and its later reprints by IMC and Kalmus. The edition is intended to replace the standard solo part with a more reliable musical text while remaining compatible with existing accompaniment materials.
The Concertino No. 1 is suitable for intermediate to early advanced cellists and is especially useful for students preparing their first serious concerto, audition repertoire, or a polished recital work.
