Fantasie-Impromptu was composed in the summer of 2004 as a work of friendship for Kim Sutton, the composer’s stand partner in the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra. The piece begins in the atmosphere of a lucid dream, gradually unfolding through colorful harmonies, flexible pacing, and an expressive ebb and flow of tempo.

The work began as a recorded improvisation, captured in one take and then written down afterward. For this reason, the composer titled the piece Impromptu, preserving the spontaneous character of the original performance while shaping it into a finished work for cello and piano.

Fantasie-Impromptu is suitable for intermediate cellists and works well as a recital piece, lyrical study, or expressive contemporary work with a dreamlike atmosphere.
