This edition of Bach’s Six Suites for Cello Solo uses Johann Peter Kellner’s 1726 manuscript, also known as Source B, as its primary source. Kellner’s manuscript predates Anna Magdalena Bach’s copy by approximately one to five years and remains one of the essential sources consulted by scholars and performers in the preparation of the Suites.

The slurring and ornamentation in this edition are based primarily on the Westphal manuscript, also known as Source C, which preserves unusually careful copying of articulation and slurs. The edition also includes suggested bowings, offering performers a practical guide while still allowing room for individual interpretation.

Both versions of the Fifth Suite are included: the standard cello version and an alternate version based on J. S. Bach’s own lute suite manuscript. Both are presented with scordatura notation. Page turns have been avoided wherever possible to make the edition practical for study and performance.

This edition is intended for cellists who want a source-informed performing text that combines historical awareness, practical usability, and clear editorial guidance.
