Komitas Vardapet (1869–1935) was an Armenian priest, composer, singer, choirmaster, and pioneering ethnomusicologist who is widely regarded as the founder of the Armenian national school of music. Much of his life’s work was devoted to collecting, preserving, and arranging Armenian folk songs, many of which might otherwise have disappeared. Krunk (The Crane) is one of the most beloved of these songs, a deeply expressive melody associated with longing, exile, and news from the homeland.

In Armenian folk tradition, the crane often appears as a messenger between the wanderer and the homeland. Krunk belongs to this world of pilgrim and exile songs, in which the singer asks the crane whether it has brought any word from home. Its directness, simplicity, and emotional depth have made it one of the most enduring Armenian melodies.

This arrangement presents Krunk for cello and piano. The song’s vocal character transfers naturally to the cello, making it a beautiful choice for developing lyrical playing, sustained tone, expressive timing, and emotional nuance.

Krunk is suitable for intermediate cellists and works well as a recital piece, encore, lyrical study, or introduction to Armenian folk-inspired repertoire.
