The word “caprice” often brings Paganini and Piatti immediately to mind, but François Servais also contributed to the genre with his 6 Caprices. Best known as one of the great Belgian cello virtuosos of the nineteenth century, Servais wrote many opera fantasies and variation sets, but these caprices show another side of his output: compact, study-like works that combine technical purpose with musical character.

This critical edition is based on the two first editions, Richault in France and Schott in Germany, both graciously provided by the Servais Society. The sources have been carefully compared and combined into a newly engraved modern edition, with textual variants between the two first editions noted in the footnotes. This is the first edition to include a full score of the two cello parts, making the works easier to study, rehearse, and perform.

This set contains the score and separate cello parts. The parts preserve Servais’s original fingerings.
