David Popper’s Im Walde (In the Forest) is one of the staples of the cello repertoire and one of his most substantial concert works. Cast as a suite, the piece combines Romantic character writing, lyrical expression, virtuoso passagework, and vivid scene painting, making it one of Popper’s most imaginative contributions to the instrument. This beautifully engraved critical edition presents the work for cello and piano with careful attention to the surviving orchestral and piano sources.
This edition is based on four sources: the first-edition orchestral score published by Rahter, plate no. 2468; the first-edition orchestral parts published by Rahter, plate no. 2469, graciously provided by the Free Library of Philadelphia; the Neue Ausgabe of the cello solo part published by Rahter, plate no. 2335; and the Neue Ausgabe of the piano reduction, also published under plate no. 2335. For the piano reduction, this edition gives priority to the orchestral score and parts over the piano reduction, since the orchestral materials contain far more detail and fewer errors. The Neue Ausgabe of the solo part remains an important source for fingerings and bowings, but it also contains numerous errors and even adds solo material in certain tutti sections, most notably between rehearsal letters I and K in Heimkehr, where the first edition gives the soloist nothing to play.
Popper’s original slurs and fingerings have been retained in the solo part, while alternative fingerings are supplied with Arabic numerals below the staff. All editorial decisions are made with the goal of clarifying the text while preserving Popper’s style and performance practice. This critical edition serves as the companion to the orchestral version of the suite. This set contains the solo cello part and the piano reduction.
Best suited for intermediate to advanced cellists, Im Walde offers rich material for recital programming, lessons, competitions, and Romantic style study. The suite gives players opportunities to develop expressive phrasing, character contrast, shifting color, lyrical playing, technical brilliance, and a broad sense of musical narrative.
