A staple of the cello repertoire, Popper's Im Walde (In The Forest) is now available in a beautifully engraved critical edition. Our edition for cello and piano is based on 4 sources: the first edition orchestra score published by Rahter (plate # 2468); first edition orchestra parts published by Rahter (plate # 2469), graciously provided by the Free Library of Philadelphia; Neue Ausgabe of the cello solo part published by Rahter (plate # 2335); and Neue Ausgabe of the piano reduction published by Rahter (plate # 2335). For the piano reduction, we give prominence to the orchestra score and parts over the piano reduction, as they contain far more details and fewer errors than the first edition piano reduction.

While considering the cello solo part of the Neue Ausgabe an important source for extra information such as fingerings and bowings, it too contains numerous errors. The Neue Ausgabe contains places where the soloist doubles the orchestra in tutti sections, most prominently between rehearsal letters I and K in Heimkehr, a place that has no music to play in the first edition.

Our edition retains Popper's slurring and fingering in the solo part, but also offers alternatives with Arabic numerals below the staff. This critical edition is the companion to the orchestra version of the Suite.
