Saint-Saëns’s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28, is one of his most popular works and a staple of the violin repertoire. Brilliant, elegant, and unmistakably Spanish in character, the piece combines a lyrical introduction with a dazzling rondo full of rhythmic vitality, virtuoso passagework, and Saint-Saëns’s characteristic refinement. Cellists have played transcriptions of this work for decades, but reliable published editions for cello have been scarce.

This edition presents the work for cello and piano, with the cello part based as closely as possible on the original violin part while making necessary idiomatic adjustments for the instrument. Typical wrong notes in measure 93 have been corrected based on the holograph manuscript and the first-edition orchestral score.

The piano reduction offers a faithful representation of the orchestral part, including corrections to common errors in measures 96–101. The result is a practical and carefully edited performing edition that gives cellists access to one of Saint-Saëns’s most beloved virtuoso works.

Best suited for advanced cellists, this transcription is ideal for recitals, competitions, auditions, and concert programs. It offers opportunities to develop Spanish character, lyrical expression, brilliant passagework, rhythmic precision, high-register command, and polished French Romantic style.
