Sibelius - Violin Concerto (Transcribed for Cello)

Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, Op. 47, is one of the towering concertos of the twentieth-century repertoire, admired for its dark lyricism, stark atmosphere, and sweeping virtuosity. This complete transcription adapts the solo violin part for cello, giving advanced cellists the opportunity to study and explore Sibelius’s concerto from the perspective of their own instrument.

This is not a mechanical octave transposition. While much of the material naturally lies an octave below the original violin part, the transcription also uses the cello’s upper register where appropriate and makes practical adjustments to passagework, voicing, fingerboard geography, and resonance.
