Henryk Wieniawski’s Polonaise brillante, Op. 21, is one of his major concert works for violin and piano, combining the noble rhythmic character of the polonaise with brilliant passagework, lyrical sweep, and nineteenth-century virtuoso flair. Published near the end of Wieniawski’s career, the piece shows the elegance, fire, and technical imagination that made him one of the defining violinist-composers of the Romantic era.
The piano part in this edition is urtext, based on the first edition printed and published by Schott in Mainz around 1875, plate number 21754. The cello part is a modern transcription, adapted idiomatically for the instrument while preserving the brilliance and lyric character of the original violin work. Suggested fingerings are included in the cello part.
Advanced, dramatic, and highly effective in performance, this transcription is well-suited for recitals, competitions, and cellists looking for a substantial Romantic concert piece beyond the standard repertoire. Its difficulty is comparable to the concert pieces and concertos of Servais and Davydov.
