Schütt - Fantasie, Op. 63 for Piano and Cello (Urtext Edition)

Eduard Schütt was a Russian-born Austrian composer and pianist whose music, though largely forgotten today, offers a distinctive voice between late Romantic lyricism and early modernist color. His musical language draws on the warmth and sweep of nineteenth-century Romanticism while also suggesting harmonic colors associated with Scriabin, Alexander Krein, and even early Prokofiev.

Schütt’s Fantasie, Op. 63, published in 1901, the same year as Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata, is an expansive and expressive work that deserves renewed attention. Structured in three movements and lasting around 16 minutes, it functions almost as a sonata. The opening movement, Im Frühling, and the concluding Humoresque-Finale are both cast in sonata form, with the first movement’s principal theme returning in the finale’s coda to give the work a satisfying cyclic unity. The central Intermezzo, written in 3/4 time and marked to be played as a march, offers a solemn, Franckian texture. Its five-part rondo form brings contrast through a nostalgic C section recalling Brahms.

Richly expressive and substantial without being overwhelmingly difficult, the Fantasie is an excellent choice for cellists seeking unusual late Romantic repertoire beyond the standard canon. It is well-suited for recitals, lessons, and advanced intermediate players ready for a larger, characterful work with lyrical depth, formal clarity, and striking harmonic color.
