Robert Schumann’s Abendlied has been a staple of the cello repertoire for well over a century, cherished for its quiet lyricism, warm Romantic harmony, and intimate expressive character. Originally written as part of the 12 Klavierstücke für kleine und große Kinder, Op. 85, the piece has long found a natural home on the cello.

This arrangement works around David Popper’s well-known cello part, expanding the piece for ensemble while preserving the lyrical character that has made it so beloved by cellists. The set includes versions in D-flat major and C major, making it practical both for more advanced groups and for less advanced ensembles that would benefit from the more accessible key.

This arrangement is part of our Homage to Cassadó series. With its gentle beauty and flexible scoring, it is well-suited for student ensembles, cello choirs, studio performances, church programs, and lyrical recital programming.
