Joseph Servais - Six Romances and Prelude (First Edition)
Joseph Servais (1850–85) was the youngest son of Belgian cellist-composer François Servais and Sophie Feygin. Following in his father’s footsteps, Joseph became a virtuoso cellist and eventually succeeded him at the Brussels Conservatory. Although his life was relatively short, he had an illustrious career and left behind a small but meaningful body of works, including a cello concerto, a string quartet, a half dozen Romances for cello and piano, one of them orchestrated, a couple of preludes, and around a dozen other incomplete works. Most notably, Joseph Servais was the dedicatee of Henry Vieuxtemps’s Second Cello Concerto, a set of melodies by Désiré Artôt, and Aubade mauresque, Op. 49 by Edouard de Hartog.
The present edition includes six Romances and a Prelude, published here for the first time. All sources used for this edition come from a private collection.
These lyrical and expressive works offer cellists a valuable addition to the nineteenth-century Belgian cello repertoire. Ranging from approachable salon-style pieces to more advanced Romantic writing, they are well suited for lessons, recitals, and performers interested in exploring the Servais legacy beyond the better-known works of François Servais.
