Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D. 821, is one of the central works of the cello repertoire, despite having been composed for the now-obsolete arpeggione. Its lyrical breadth, intimate chamber style, and deeply expressive slow movement have made it a favorite among cellists, violists, and other instrumentalists.

This transcription for cello has been prepared with careful attention to Schubert’s autograph manuscript. A small number of idiomatic transpositions have been made to accommodate the range and resonance of the cello, but the musical text otherwise preserves the pitches, slurs, and articulations as they appear in the source. No additional phrasing, bowings, or expressive markings have been introduced beyond what is supported by the autograph manuscript.

This edition contains the cello part only. A piano part is not included.

Well suited for advanced cellists, teachers, and performers preparing Schubert’s sonata, this edition offers a clean, source-based cello part for serious study and performance. It gives players an opportunity to explore Classical-Romantic phrasing, vocal lyricism, subtle articulation, long-range structure, and the intimate expressive world of Schubert’s chamber music.
