Bernhard Romberg wrote many works intended for students, but his Three Trios, Op. 38, also known as sonatas, have achieved a lasting place in the cello teaching repertoire. These works have withstood the test of time and continue to be studied around the world, offering developing cellists music that is pedagogically valuable, musically elegant, and enjoyable in performance.

Many cellists know these pieces through the commonly used Gustav Jansen edition, later published by IMC. That version, however, is highly edited and substantially recomposed. Romberg’s original instrumentation is also often misunderstood: these works were written for solo cello accompanied by viola and cello, not by double bass. This new Urtext edition restores Romberg’s original text while adding a few practical clarifications regarding fingerings and bowings in the separate cello part.

This set includes a score and parts.

Well suited for lessons, studio classes, recitals, and ensemble study, these trios give developing cellists valuable experience with Classical style, solo playing within a chamber texture, ensemble balance, intonation, phrasing, articulation, and responsive collaboration. They remain excellent teaching works while also standing as graceful and worthwhile pieces in their own right.
