We are happy to present the first Urtext edition of these "old standard" Op. 31 Etudes by Sebastian Lee (1805 - 1887). Our edition is based on the first edition published in Paris by A. Aulagnier, in 1843, plates A.A. 832 and 833. We would like to thank the Bibliothèque nationale de France for putting these composer-approved publications at our disposal. Every edition currently available on the market is based on Hugo Becker's edition, originally published by Schott in the late 1800s, after the composer's death. Becker took many liberties with the score, most notably cutting 116 bars from around 10 etudes, and recomposing other passages.

Our edition keeps Lee's original musical text and other markings. A few fingerings were added for clarification. Any other deviations from the original text, such as obvious misprints, are noted in the footnotes. All 40 Etudes are conveniently included in one volume.

We hope that our new edition shows the new generations of students how well-crafted Lee's etudes are.
