These three short pieces were composed at the request of Fein’s friend, Catherine Clyatt Schroth, who premiered them on January 27, 2007. The titles of the movements were conceived after the composition of the movements. The jazz influences seemed to suggest that these pieces might be “about something.” Fein invented a little narrative in three parts. In the first movement, “Stepping Out,” we feel the anticipation and excitement about going out to a party on a Friday night. “Aside” depicts the lull of the evening – that moment when melancholy temporarily sets in. “Dancing till Dawn” represents a new surge of energy, not entirely in control.
